A MAN'S WORLD
Directed By: Michelle Nolden - Canada - 6 min
Tyler is 11 years old and when he doesn't make the select hockey team, he is hesitant to tell his Dad, Paul. He breaks the news, while Paul's middle aged buddies are over watching the game, providing an escape from much needed communication. In a common adult/adolescent situation of not being able to read one another's signs, Paul loses a critical teaching moment, leaving Tyler with an emotional void that should have been filled. Add to that the advice about being a man, from Paul's buddies and Tyler faces the reality that the emotional language of men is complicated.
Feeling badly, Paul goes to check on Tyler. Able to say to his sleeping son, what he should have said to his face, Paul shows us that the love and connection are strong, just wearing a few layers of bravado and machismo. Turns out, Tyler hears it all, is reassured but has nevertheless, entered the world of manhood.
